GEF-UNIDO Project Included in State Program for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources for 2021–2025 of the Republic of Belarus

April 02, 2021

By decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 99 dated 19.02.2021, State Program for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources for 2021–2025 was approved.

The project for coordinated management of ODS and POP disposal in Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Armenia, a regional demonstration project implemented by the GEF and UNIDO to grant international technical assistance (ITA) to the participating countries, became a part of subprogram 3 “Management of persistent organic pollutants” aimed at fulfilling commitments of the Republic of Belarus under the Stockholm Convention.

As a reminder, through the project Belarus will receive equipment for destruction of POPs and other hazardous wastes in an environmentally sound manner, which will be physically based at the Gomel toxic industrial waste treatment and disposal facility.

Activities included in the subprogram will be financed by the republican and local budgets, ITA, and internal resources of POP owners; so, co-financing is the approach that underlies the decontamination of hazardous wastes as part of the project.
